It’s often a challenge to find the will to exercise during the cold, winter months. When it’s 10° F and snowing outside, your warm bed or an evening curled up on the couch is much more tempting than running on the treadmill.
On top of this, living in temporary housing can present another hurdle in maintaining your healthy habits. We at Travelers Haven place our renters’ wellbeing first and foremost, though. We know the tips and tricks to keep up an active lifestyle, even during the dead of winter in a home away from home. Many of our partner properties include access to fitness centers, saunas, and nearby gyms.
It’s been proven that regular physical activity leads to an improved mood, strong bones, and a reduced risk of several serious diseases. Here are ways an indoor gym can bring you out of your winter exercise slump.
1. Sample a variety of fitness equipment.
An indoor gym packs more workout options, so boredom will never be an excuse. If you’ve always stuck with cardio, you can easily switch it up and experiment with weights in an indoor gym. It’s been shown that by varying your routine and trying new equipment, you can work different muscle groups. This ultimately improves the quality of your workout and your ability to meet your fitness goals.
2. Make it social through fitness classes.
If the thought of hopping on the elliptical for 30 minutes doesn’t excite you, you may be more interested in an engaging fitness class. Choose from cycling, Pilates, yoga, and other cardio- and strength-focused themes. The other great benefit of fitness classes is that they typically occur at the same time every week. Make it a goal to attend every class as a motivation tool.
3. Customize your workout with help from a personal trainer.
Many gyms have personal trainers on staff who are available to assist members. Personal trainers are a great resource if you have a specific fitness goal in mind and need some guidance getting there. Additionally, many personal trainers are trained in nutrition sciences and can create a customized diet plan for you upon request.
4. Surround yourself with like-minded people.
Regularly working out can be particularly hard if exercise is not your idea of “fun.” Luckily, when you join a gym, you’re not alone. Knowing that you are in a room full of people who have similar health goals may give you the incentive and assurance that exercise should be a regular part of your life.
